Navigate through Belize’s jungle and enjoy nature in its purest form. Approximately 60% of Belize’s land is rich jungle with over 28% protected as nature reserves. There are myriads of opportunities for nature lovers. Belize is home to roughly 145 species of mammals. It has over 600 species of birds, and over 100 reptiles. Check into a jungle lodge with adventure right outside your doorstep. Spend the day birdwatching, hiking dirt trails to waterfalls or wondering through Belize’s wildlands by horseback, that leads you to the lost cities of the Ancient Maya.

Birding in Belize

There are popular places to embark on your birding adventures. Belize has six internationally recognized Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). Cayo being one of Belize’s leading birding destination. Sightings include the King Vulture, Keel-Billed Toucan, Motmot, Hepatic Tanager, Stygian Owl and much more. Moving further inland to the Mountain Pine Ridge you can spot Orange-breasted Falcon and the Red Crossbill amongst others. The South of Belize is also popular for birding. Varied habitats, from the mangroves, beaches, to the Maya mountains and savannas make for thriving biodiversity. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular area which boasts 350 species of birds, including the Scarlet Macaw. In the North, visit Crooked Tree and take a boat tour down the lagoon. It is home to plenty water birds. You can possibly spot the Jabiru Stork, known to be the largest flying bird in the Western Hemisphere. It has a wing span of up to 10 feet. Also, while exploring the lagoon you can spot other wildlife such as crocodiles and spider monkeys.

Wildlife in Belize

Belize is home to the world first Jaguar Preserve, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary which covers 128,000 acres. Here you can spot all five species of cats from the Puma, Ocelot, Margay, Jaguar and the Jaguarondi. As wild cats roam freely, plenty of birds, reptiles and mammals dawdle around, making for a diverse wildlife sanctuary. Just a 30-minute drive northwest of Placencia, it is definitely worth a visit. You can spend the day birdwatching, hiking, or taking a refreshing dip in one of the three waterfalls on site. The Belize Zoo, located roughly 29 miles west of Belize City, is also a great day out if you are an animal lover. Covering 29 acres of tropical grassland it is home to many exotic wildlife that have been rescued over the years. Enjoy private encounters with toucans, jaguars and much more.
